Radar Detectors

One of my best friends practically swears by his radar detector. He has had it ever since high school. When he first bought it, it was a big deal. We were teenage boys, pretty driven by our testosterone. We liked to speed, but of course we didn't like to get caught. In the community that I grew up in, the cops were pretty suspicious of kids. If you were under 18 and driving, even if you were law-abiding, you could easily get pulled over for no reason and given a ticket. Radar detectors were not only a way to try to get away with speeding, but also a way to try to avoid cops altogether.

Still, I was skeptical that it would work. It was a pretty cutting-edge radar laser detector, and the reviews were good, but I couldn't believe that such a thing was possible. He had spent more than 300 dollars on it ñ a few months of saving for him at that time. It would blink and beep all the time, and it seemed like the warnings were so constant that it was almost pointless. Still, when he went three years without getting a single ticket despite his speeding, I thought I'd give it a chance myself. After all, what did I have to lose?

I bought myself a radar detector when I was going off to college. Radar detectors had gone up in quality and down in price, and I had a lot more money than I had had in high school. It was a pretty cutting-edge Cobra radar detector, and was also inconspicuous. I had checked out radar laws, and it seemed like I could get it in the county I lived in. I was a little worried that cops would be suspicious when they saw it, but I figured that the purpose of a radar detector was not to get pulled over in the first place.

I have got to tell you, that radar detector has worked wonders for me. Nowadays, I get where I'm going faster, but I never get pulled over by cops. Although radar detectors are not one hundred percent accurate, they are pretty good. Usually, if you're going to be radared by a cop, he will be checking someone else's speed before you get there. That will send a signal, one which your detector radar will pick up. You always have at least a minute or two to slow down. This is plenty of time to check your speed limit and make sure you don't get into trouble.
