Alexander The Great

Some historic figures capture the imagination and become legendary. Alexander the Great is the subject of many TV documentaries, books, movies, songs, poems and even computer games. His impact on modern times is quite remarkable given that he died when he was just 32 years old.

The Ancient Greek King of Macedon ruled from 336–323 BC and conquered most of the world, which was known at that time to his people. He is cited as the most successful military leader in history and there is no record of his being defeated in battle. Such was his status, when he died in Babylon; his body was placed in a gold sarcophagus. The cause of Alexander the Great's death is still the subject of debate amongst historians.

The sweep of his victories was epic and enthusiasts of military history still study the many battles that he was involved in. Lands that fell under his reign included India and Afghanistan. Many towns were named after the king, including Alexandria in Egypt and Alexandria on the Indus in Pakistan.

Ancient civilizations are often the themes of television drama and Alexander the Great was broadcast in 1968 as a made for TV film. The hero was played by William Shatner, best known for his role as Captain Kirk in Star Trek. The film also starred John Cassavetes, Hollywood veteran Joseph Cotten, and Adam West, who had climbed out of his Batman suit.

The story of the military leader has been taken up by different cultures. Alexander Senki is a Japanese made anime version, broadcast as a TV series in 1997. Two feature films on Alexander the Great were made in India, in 1941 and 1965. An Italian animated film of the story came out in 2006.

An impressive cast was selected for the 1956 film, Alexander the Great with Richard Burton in the leading role. He was joined by Fredric March, Claire Bloom and Peter Cushing. Director Oliver Stone made his own epic version in 2004. Simply titled Alexander, it starred Colin Farrell as the eponymous hero.

Larger than life heroes are sometimes merged with heavy metal music. The English band, Iron Maiden brought all their grandeur to their 1986 track, Alexander the Great from the album, Somewhere in Time. The lyrics go into great detail, chronicling the major milestones in Alexander's life.

Computer games are also suited to ancient battles and stories of conquests. Alexander the Great rules over the games titled Age of Empires, Rise of Nations: Thrones and Patriots, Sid Meier's Civilization IV, and Rise and Fall: Civilizations of War.
